Career Development Series: A Career Journey to the CDC

Course Information:

In this course, Aaron Borrelli, MPH, MHMS speaks about his personal journey to working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, important tips about applying to these jobs, the hiring process, and resources necessary to begin the search for federal public health careers. The duties, requirements, qualifications, and resources for applying to federal jobs are discussed.


The objective of the Career Development Series is to expose students to various career paths and skills to help them be successful as a public health professional once they graduate. Specifically, this course contains recorded content from the Careers in Public Health series where public health professionals from Northern Nevada speak about the vast world of public health. 

This series is aimed to help students identify careers in public health, learn how to apply, interview, and ultimately gain insight to what careers in public health look like. Students will learn special tips and tricks to get their foot in the door to land their dream career!  


Learning Objectives:

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify different careers in public health. 
  2. Understand the necessary steps to apply, interview, and ultimately achieve a career with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  3. Identify resources to begin applying to federal public health jobs.
  4. Understand the vast world of career options in public health.

About the Speaker

Aaron Borrelli is a Public Health Advisor at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In his current position, Aaron serves as Program Integration Advisor in the Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections in CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. Aaron’s work provides coordination of partner programs for a large, national cooperative agreement focused on prevention and control of emerging infectious diseases, including COVID-19. Aaron has 25 years of experience with the U.S. federal government serving at the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia, and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Aaron’s experience includes roles in program coordination, health policy analysis, program management, business analysis, and information management with federal programs for infectious diseases, immunization, and environmental health. Aaron has worked with a variety of special program areas including the Prevention and Public Health Fund, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Ebola, Pandemic Influenza, and COVID-19.

Aaron holds a Master of Public Health degree from Florida International University in Miami, Florida, and a Master’s degree and Bachelor of Science in Health Management Systems from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
