Career Development Series: Management Perspective

Course Information:

This course explains the application, interview, and follow-up processes, as well as special tips and tricks to land a career in public health. Andrea L. Gregg and Dana Roscom, MSW of High Sierra Area Health Education Center and Jeanne Freeman, PhD, CHES of the Quad-County Public Health Preparedness program in Nevada discuss and explain the importance of students being able to take the information and skills learned throughout school and apply it to their career, starting with describing their specific knowledge in the interview and carrying it throughout the entirety of their career. 


The objective of the Career Development Series is to expose students to various career paths and skills to help them be successful as a public health professional once they graduate. Specifically, this course contains recorded content from the Careers in Public Health series where public health professionals from Northern Nevada speak about the vast world of public health. 

This series is aimed to help students identify careers in public health, learn how to apply, interview, and ultimately gain insight to what careers in public health look like. Students will learn special tips and tricks to get their foot in the door to land their dream career!  


Learning Objectives:

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify different careers in public health. 
  2. Understand what makes a competitive and sought-after employee. 
  3. Understand how to apply for a job, prepare for an interview, follow-up after an interview, and maintain a career in public health. 
  4. Utilize learned experiences in a future career.

About the Speakers

Andrea Gregg is the Chief Executive Officer of High Sierra Area Health Education Center, an organization whose purpose is to meet the needs of the communities it serves through robust community-academic partnerships, with a focus on recruiting, training, and developing the state of Nevada’s healthcare workforce.  Andrea has over 13 years of comprehensive nonprofit management within the healthcare and public health sector.  She has lead an award winning organization and through her efforts has been recognized by the National AHEC Organization receiving the 2019 Center of Excellence Award.  In addition, she was recognized by the Northern Nevada Business Weekly, receiving a prestigious Community Partner award.  Most recently, Andrea was among the top 10 finalist Influential Women of Sierra Nevada, recognized for her innovation and impact.   Through her work Andrea values thriving partnerships and seeks innovative opportunities that further enhance the mission of High Sierra AHEC.  She is currently leading several efforts within her organization that will help to transform its organizational culture, continuing efforts that focus on blossoming possibilities, outcomes, and optimism.  Recognized for a high motivation level, the ability to promote and exemplify leadership, and for making significant contributions within the community, Andrea looks forward to many more years scaling up an organization whose mission she deeply values.  In her free time, she loves spending time with her husband, 6-year-old son, Hudson, and 3-year-old daughter Hadley.  As a family they live for adventure, love the outdoors, and value life’s lesson along the way.    

Dana Roscom is the Chief Operating Officer for High Sierra AHEC whose mission is to recruit and develop the future leaders of healthcare through a comprehensive workforce development pipeline. Dana earned her Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Community Health Sciences from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2011 and her Masters of Social Work Degree with an emphasis in Community, Organizational and Business Innovation in 2018. Through her journey in the field of social work, passion for program development, and improving organizational systems, she strives in identifying innovative approaches to inspiring and creating healthcare career pathways for disadvantaged and underserved student populations. In her free time, Dana enjoys spending time with her husband Jayson and daughters, Ilyana and Julia.

Jeanne Freeman is the Manager for the Quad-County Public Health Preparedness program in Nevada. In her position, she serves Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey Counties. Jeanne and her staff serve as the liaisons for the Quad-County Healthcare Coalition in support of the Quad-County Multi-Agency Coordination (MAC) group. She serves the State of Nevada as the Co-Chair of the Intrastate Mutual Aid Committee and a member of the Nevada Resiliency Commission. Throughout the COVID-19 response, Jeanne has been the Incident Commander for the Quad-Counties region overseeing community-based testing, mass vaccinations, and reporting to political figures. Prior to her service in the Quad-Counties, she was the Nevada Trauma Registry Manager for 1 ½ years at the Division of Public and Behavioral Health. Jeanne holds a Bachelor’s Degree from La Sierra University, a Master’s Degree from University of Nevada, Reno, and a Doctorate Degree from the University of Arkansas. Before moving “home” to Nevada in 2017, Jeanne was a tenured professor at Western Washington University. She served as the Community Health Program Coordinator, published several peer-reviewed articles, and delivered more than thirty research presentations at national and international conferences. Jeanne continues to teach as a Division of Emergency Management approved instructor for Incident Command Structure (ICS) courses. Jeanne is the honored spouse of a first responder and proud mom to two amazing boys! She enjoys spending her free time as a baseball mom and supporting her family in all their endeavors!
