AAPHP Webinar: Social Justice and Public Health

Social justice is pivotal to public health. This presentation will highlight how Loyola University Chicago has successfully brought social justice to the forefront of public health academia through the course Health Justice Lab: Race and Health Equity, which teaches on the intersection of racism, poverty, health, and the law, and the Health Justice Project Clinic- Weekend edition. 


AAPHP webinars are a free online webinar series designed to support and represent member programs through the accreditation process and in preparing a competent public health workforce. Each webinar takes approximately 1-hour to complete.

To join the live session, please enroll in the course before 10am PST on the day of the webinar. All sessions are recorded. If you enroll after the live webinar session has ended, the course will contain a video recording of the live session you can watch instead. Please note, it may take up to one month for the recording to become available.

About the Speakers

Maya Watson,  BA, JD, LLM, Director, Maywood Medical-Legal Partnership

Maya Watson joined the Health Justice Project in 2020 after 11 years of practicing transactional law for clients across the country.She serves as the Director of the Maywood Medical-Legal Partnership, an interdisciplinary partnership among Loyola University Chicago School of Law’s Health Justice Project, Loyola Medicine, and Stritch School of Medicine. The Maywood MLP serves patients of Loyola Medicine facilities, including the Center for Health on Roosevelt in Maywood, IL, by collaborating with the Clinic’s providers and staff to address the health-harming legal needs of vulnerable patients and advocating for policies that combat systemic barriers to health.

Watson also co-teaches Health Justice Lab: Race and Health Equity, a seminar on the intersection of racism, poverty, health, and the law, and the Health Justice Project Clinic - Weekend edition.

Prior to joining Loyola, Watson helped establish the Health and Human Rights Institute of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, where she convened a 2020 Health Summit to address mental health disparities among population groups in the country.Watson has been admitted to practice law in Illinois, California, and Michigan.
