This training focuses on the issues and concerns surrounding disparities in the healthcare setting. The 13 topics range from discrimination and social identity to implicit bias and microaggressions. The goal of the training is to allow participants to reflect on how their social identity impacts the ways they move through their world as they interact with others. This directly impacts how the healthcare system functions in providing care to everyone.
These are difficult topics to discuss and examine, this course does not shy away from the tough conversations. For some participants, there will be moments when topics cover difficult scenarios and situations.

Detailed instructions and any required zoom links are available after registration on the MakingHealthHappen website. The synchronous course is taught during a 3-day AM Session (9 am to 12 pm), a 3-day PM Session (2 pm to 5 pm) or a 3/6 Session of 3 hours on the first day and 6 hours on the second day. Regulation Requirements
This training meets the requirements of Nevada's NRS 449 for Cultural Competency in Healthcare Facilities. It covers the topics and levels of content required by NRS 449. See NRS 449 for additional details.
Training also meets the requirements of Nevada's Legislature: AB327 (81st Session).

Liz Amaya-Fernandez, MPH
Liz is an educator/trainer on social justice and public health issues, with an emphasis on sexuality, global health, community engagement, cultural competence and humility. They work full-time as a Senior Public Health Diversity Advisor at the Trudy Larson MD Institute for Health Impact and Equity, School of Public Health at the University of Nevada, Reno. They also work as an adjunct professor and full-spectrum doula supporting birthing people of all genders. Prior to joining the University of Nevada, Reno, Liz worked as a health educator at Rutgers University and William Paterson University. She has also worked as Director of Education at the National Latina Health Network. Their MPH is from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University.

Will I receive a certificate at the end of the training?
Yes, at the end of the training, after completing the post evaluation, a certificate is available for download and/or printing. Make sure to submit the certificate to your employer and keep a copy for yourself. The certificate is good for 1 year from the date of completion.

Can I attend different days of different trainings?
The synchronous training must be completed during the single course session the participant is registered for. The asynchronous training can be taken at your own pace, but must be completed within 30 days. Both versions follow a specific curriculum and there is no mixing and matching of days or training modalities.

This course is required annually, is there a refresher course?
At this time, the refresher course is being developed. As soon as it is approved, it will be available on www.makinghealthhappen.org.

Does everyone in a group have to register for the course or can we share a computer?
Each person has to be registered individually to receive a certificate. Multiple people can view the training in a group setting as long as everyone can use a separate device to participate in polling and evaluations.

Go to www.makinghealthhappen.org and select the course/dates you would like to register for. Once at makinghealthhappen.org, you will need to create a profile to register for the course. For the synchronous trainings, please make sure you login before the course date to ensure access to the zoom sessions.

Are captions or other languages available?
All trainings meet ADA accessibility guidelines. Videos used in the training can be captioned. Live transcript options are available through zoom. Please contact Liz Amaya-Fernandez ([email protected]) PRIOR to the training to set up any needed accommodations. Currently, the trainings are only available in English.

Is the course material/slides available?
After registering for a course, participants will have access to a resource page that has the slides in PDF format and other resources as mentioned during the training.
